Apis mellifera and Melipona scutellaris exhibit differential sensitivity to thiamethoxam

چکیده

Apis mellifera is a pollinator insect model in pesticide risk assessment tests for bees. However, given the economic and ecological importance of stingless bees such as Melipona scutellaris Neotropical region, well lack studies on effect insecticides these bees, toxicity should be carried out to understand whether affect both species same manner. Thus, present study quantified differential sensitivity M. A. oral ingestion insecticide thiamethoxam by determining mean lethal concentration (LC50), time (LT50), their target organ, brain. The results showed that bee more sensitive than mellifera, with lower LC50 0.0543 ng active ingredient (a.i.)/?L compared 0.227 a.i./?L mellifera. When exposed sublethal concentration, morphological ultrastructural analyses were performed evidenced significant increase spaces between nerve cells species. not most appropriate or unique determine

A Comparative Study of Relational Learning Capacity in Honeybees (Apis mellifera) and Stingless Bees (Melipona rufiventris)

BACKGROUND Learning of arbitrary relations is the capacity to acquire knowledge about associations between events or stimuli that do not share any similarities, and use this knowledge to make behavioural choices. This capacity is well documented in humans and vertebrates, and there is some evidence it exists in the honeybee (Apis mellifera). However, little is known about whether the ability fo...

Sublethal effects of the neonicotinoid insecticide thiamethoxam on the transcriptome of the honeybee (Apis mellifera)

Neonicotinoid insecticides are now the most widely used insecticides in the world. 10 Previous studies have indicated that sublethal doses of neonicotinoids impair learning, memory 11 capacity, foraging and immunocompetence in honeybees (Apis mellifera). Despite this, few 12 studies have been carried out on the molecular effects of neonicotinoids. In this study, we focus on 13 the second-genera...

Antimicrobial and antiproliferative activities of stingless bee Melipona scutellaris geopropolis

BACKGROUND Geopropolis is a type of propolis containing resin, wax, and soil, collected by threatened stingless bee species native to tropical countries and used in folk medicine. However, studies concerning the biological activity and chemical composition of geopropolis are scarce. In this study, we evaluated the antimicrobial and antiproliferative activity of the ethanolic extract of geopropo...

Does beekeeping reduce genetic variability in Melipona scutellaris (Apidae, Meliponini)?

Many factors have contributed to reductions in wild populations of stingless bees, such as: deforestation, displacement and destruction of nests by honey gatherers, as well as use of insecticides and other agrochemicals. All of these can potentially affect the populational structure of native species. We analyzed genetic variability and populational structure of Melipona scutellaris, based on f...

Genetic variability in Melipona scutellaris from Recôncavo, Bahia, Brazil.

Bees play a key role in pollination and thereby help maintain plant diversity. The stingless bee Melipona scutellaris is an important pollinator in northeastern Brazil because it is endemic to this region. Both deforestation and timber harvesting have reduced the nesting sites for this species, thus reducing its population and range. Genetic studies may help reverse this process by providing im...
